7 TIPS TO TACKLE THE INSTAGRAM ALGORITHM

GIRL YOU ARE THE BOSS TSHIRT
Everyone is struggling with Instagram engagement and growth recently, and yesterday it was revealed that they're actually taking 30-40% of your audience, unless you pay to promote your posts, of course. Big thanks to Facebook for fucking my favourite social media platform up, nice one guys.

The Algorithm means we're seeing posts from a week ago, and not in chronological order- meaning sometimes we never see posts on our feed from the people we're actually following. Unless you're prepared to cash out, it's a loosing battle. However, there are a few things you can do to help things along and ensure you're making the most of your audience, without paying a penny!

1. POST PICTURES TAKEN ON YOUR IPHONE...
For whatever reason, Instagram really doesn't like you uploading photos that weren't taken on your device- the quality decreases severely and ends up looking worse than a photo just taken on your iPhone camera. Also, you'll notice that your photo will be seen a lot less and receive less engagement if it's been taken on a camera! I don't know why Instagram do this, it's just another one of their games. If I upload a photo taken on my camera I use for my blog, it receives at least 30 less likes.

2. COMMENT, LIKE, COMMENT, LIKE...
I used to be terrible with engaging with accounts I followed, I used to scroll down my feed for a long time and not like or comment on a single picture. Now I've started to make a conscious effort to like every photo on my feed, every photo I see on my feed I'll like, because I know everyone is struggling. If I'm feeling extra nice, or I just have something to say I'll leave a comment at any given opportunity, and it's always nice to give compliments on selfies! It's nice to be nice, and I've found that a lot more people comment more often on my selfies now, which is pretty self esteem boosting too.

3. USE THE FOLLOWING TAB...
I've discovered some of my fave accounts using the following tab, and gained some followers! On the following tab you can see what the people you're following are liking and commenting on, which is great for discovering new accounts and engaging. I scroll through my following tab for a good half hour, clicking on pictures people I follow have liked, and then proceeding to like them myself- people will usually like back and follow back! If you know someone who gets a lot of likes and comments on their posts, you can see the accounts they're engaging with and go and do it yourself. It's great because you know the accounts are active and within your niche.

4. UPDATE YOUR STORY DAILY...
If you update your story daily then it ensures you're along the top of your followers feeds. I try to post at least once on my story everyday, and if I post multiple times I notice my engagement and followers increase better that day. If people like your story, they're more inclined to press on your profile. Nobody can forget about you if you're constantly along the top of their homepage, even if your pictures don't reach their feed! Your story may also show up on the 'explore,' page, which reaches people who don't follow you too. If you think your latest post isn't reaching many followers, print screen your grid and post it on your story and tell your followers it's there!

5. KEEP A THEME'ISH...
I'm really not great myself at keeping a strict theme, I mean I always use the same filter and try to use the same backgrounds etc. But my life just isn't really Insta worthy and aesthetically pleasing. I find it really hard to keep an obvious theme, but I find that people with strict, obvious themes have the most followers- and I'm totally guilty of following people because I like their aesthetic. I just cannot stick to a strict scheme myself, I like to post everyday life, selfies, food, a bit of everything- and all of those things certainly don't look aesthetically pleasing. But do the best you can, stick to the same filter and the same sort of brightness etc. People often do shout outs of their favourite Instgram grids, and it's always the people with a theme!

6. POST DAILY...
This is a tough one, because most of the time when I post a picture I can gain 5 followers from it, but then loose 10! But if you're posting daily, that means you're reaching out to your audience, and to others everyday, so they know you're there. I rarely follow accounts that only post every 5 days, because with the algorithm, I'm just never going to see them! Accounts that post daily or every other day are my favourites. Also, the more you post- the more content there is for people to see and like. So they're more likely to follow you!

7. COMMENT WITH HASHTAGS...
Always make the most of your hashtags, once you've posted a photo you need to get into your comment section super speedy and hashtag like mad. The quicker, the better. If you comment with them instead of putting them in the caption, it just makes it a lot less messy and distracting. I think it also makes people click on the comment to see what it is, so y'know they might as well leave a comment whilst they're there! There are literally hundreds of hashtags to use, and theres even apps you can download that tell you the most popular ones, and let you copy and paste them all so it's a lot quicker!
